Be Relentless   5 comments

Relentless – not relenting, steady, persistent, determined, immovable, uncompromising, undeviating, unflinching, unstoppable

We need to be relentless about:

our faith,

our beliefs,

overcoming addictions,

overcoming sins,

getting projects done around the house that have been left undone for long periods of time,

cleaning the car (inside and out),

keeping in touch with family and friends(as long as they are not exhibiting toxic behavior),

reading our Bible everyday,

praying for others everyday,

praying for ourselves everyday,

finding at least one person everyday to give a compliment to,

seeking conversation with Jesus everyday,

taking time to praise and worship Jesus everyday,

getting exercise everyday,

eating healthy everyday,

getting that closet or room organized,

getting the yard to look decent,

spending time with the kids/grandkids(if you can),

spending time with your spouse,

clean and get rid of stuff in the garage,

thinking positive thoughts about one’s self everyday,

knowing and living it out that you are important to Jesus,

knowing and living it out that you are valuable to Jesus,

knowing and living it out that Jesus has your best interests in mind,

knowing and living it out that ALL things will work out for your good and His glory,

being thankful with what you do have and not complaining about what you don’t have,

saying, “I love you” to a loved one at least once a week(if you can do more great),

getting to know someone better,

If you would like to add anything to this list, give it a try.

140 Characters, Before, During And Possibly After Twitter   Leave a comment

I just read a blog about the danger of tweeting sermon snippets during the sermon, and probably even after is included. The danger being, reducing what is said into such short “pieces” that the true message is lost.

That led me to the following thought…….

The most memorble and most helpful words I have gotten in my life have been less than 140 characters and some of them have been before twitter even existed and some from reading a tweet…….

1) Holiness is the presence of God, not the absence of sin. (Heard from the mouth of my pastor behind the pulpit about twenty years ago and helps me keep my focus on Jesus instead of my failures.)

2) You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. (Of course from the Bible.)

3) You and your family will be here. (Spoken by Jesus Christ to me on a greyhound bus about 17 years ago when I was single and not even in a relationship, this statement to this day helps keep my marriage intact.)

4) People often get married for selfish reasons, but it takes unselfish reasons to stay married. (Tweeted by Rick Warren back in August 2011, another statement that helps keep my marriage intact.)

5) You’re right on schedule. (Spoken by Jesus Christ to me about two months ago. He knew I needed to know I hadn’t failed Him and that I was exactly where I was suppose to be with some of my thoughts and quanderings.)

There are of course many, many adages and sayings like – “A stitch in time saves nine.” , “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” , “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” – that are 140 or less characters long. It seems to me the twitter concept has been around for 1000’s of years.

“JESUS is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Again, straight from the Bible.)

I also thought of this verse – Proverbs 17:28 ” Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips,  he is considered perceptive. ” Its not the quantity of words spoken, but the quality. (another <140 characters saying.) So I say tweet away tweeters, you never know whom it may help.

And if you don’t tweet…….use old school – a post it note…….or even older school – papyrus/stone tablet……..

1) Find a Bible

2) Pick a verse or passage.

3) Insert your own or someone you are praying for, name into the text and pray that everyday as many times as you like or think is good. Use pronouns if you would like. You can also pray it in the second person grammatical form of speaking/writing.

Psalm 23{second person in parenthesis} – The LORD(You LORD) is(are) Susan’s shepherd, she shall not want. He(You) makes(make) her to lie down in green pastures, He leads(You lead) her besides still waters. He restores(You restore) her soul. He leads(You lead) her in the paths of righteousness for His name’s(Your name) sake. Though she walks through the valley of the shadow of death, she will fear no evil, for You are with her, Your rod and Your staff, they comfort her. You prepare a table before her in the presence of her enemies. You anoint her head with oil. Her cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow her all the days of her life. And she will dwell in the house of the LORD(Your house) forever.

Romans 8:28 (first person) – And I know that all things work together for good to me who loves You and is called according to Your purpose

(for someone else) – And Susan knows that all things work together for good for her, for she loves You and is called according to Your purpose.

Now go and open up the door of Heaven and release everything in His storehouse

Identity Crisis? (part 2)   1 comment

Thank you for your responses to part 1. (Here and at other sites I have posted it.)  Instead of just responding to individual comments, I wanted to do a whole new blog.

The idea for this blog started a couple years back when I took a sign language class. Deaf people have established their own identity –  being deaf. They have Deaf Pride rallys/days and stuff like that. Of course, so do a whole lot of other “groups”.  So, what’s the big deal?

Well, I started thinking about how humans get their identities from temporary things and alot of people “loose it” when those things change. They go through what is called an “identity crisis”. They “loose their way” and go into a time of confusion and alot of times doubt. My personal goal is to avoid going through an identity crisis and to set up measures for prevention. I can’t say that I have never gone through an identity crisis, because I have and maybe that is part of life and being human. Maybe I shouldn’t even be working on preventing one in my future, but so far that is what I want to do. I’m not wanting to go through an identity crisis again, it wasn’t fun and I missed having joy and peace, and I hated “feeling lost” and having to deal with doubts and anger.

Since having implemented the prevention measures, I have had more peace and joy when faced with a possible identity crisis and have avoided the debilitating aspects (feeling lost, having doubts, anger, etc.) of going through one. Or have at least, cut down on the intensity and length of time of having to deal with the “negative” aspects of going through an identity crisis. Since things have worked out better for me from my perspective, I want to share my experience and workings just in case someone else would want the same for their life. .

We all should know that these things we put our identities in are not always bad in of themselves, its our attachment to them that is or can be the deciding factor.  How will we be affected if element “A”,”B” or “C” changes? Will we go into a deep depression? Will we get angry? Confused? Play the blame game? Have indifference or peace about it, because it doesn’t matter one way or another?

So instead of relying on any number of temporary things to tell me who I am or who I’m not, I’m concentrating on the one thing or the things that I like/love, that I know won’t ever change. So far, so good, I’m really loving the results. Time will tell if this is really a temporary or indeed a lasting outcome.

Identity Crisis? (part 1)   1 comment

What do you put your identity in or pull your identity from?

teacher? fireman? parent? child of so & so? manager? business owner? the country you were born in? your physical condition? your pay check amount? the size of house you live in? the church you attend? the school you attend or attended? the city or part of town you live in? married? single? what gender you are?

Ask yourself two questions – Can that change for any reason before my mortal body gets discarded? Will it matter for me after my mortal body is discarded?

It seems everyone wants to find their identity in things that are are temporary.

(fill in this blank with anything you want)  Pride ! – 99% of things I have heard that people use to fill in that blank are temporary, stuck to life on earth as a human in a mortal body.

I propose that at least 50% of those things we put our identity in (I wonder if its more like 75%-90%) do change during the span of one’s life span.

We have to find our identity in something that will never change. Or Someone that never changes. I’m a child of the King of kings. I have “sign the dotted line”. My name is in The Lamb’s Book Of Life, never to be blotted out. No matter what identity I grab at, that’s the one that will never change, not now or in eternity.

Is there a difference between these two statements? :

1) I’m an athlete(nurse, dancer, mayor, etc.) that happens to be a Christian.

2) I’m a Christian that happens to be an athlete(nurse, dancer, mayor, etc.).

Let’s endeavor to find and build our identity where it will last forever. Let’s hold very loosely onto those things that our identity can easily be taken from us.

Isaiah 29:16 ” Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; for shall the thing made say of Him who made it, ‘He did not make me’? Or shall the thing formed say of Him who formed it, ‘He has no understanding”?

Isaiah 55:8&9 ” ‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the LORD. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.'”

Jeremiah 29:11 ” For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 23:4 ” Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 103:2-5 ” Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. “

Psalm 147:3 ” He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 ” To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”

Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”

James 1:2-4 ” My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

When we see a pool that is drained of its water, a fountain not running and is dry or a boat in dry dock, “drought” is not usually the first word that comes to our minds. Especially if we see them torn up. We most likely will think of the words “under construction”.
Sometimes we may feel that “our lives” are in a drought. But, that may not be the case. The LORD is just working on us. There are several reasons to drain a pool of its water, turn a fountain off or put a boat in dry dock: 1) There are non working parts that need to be fixed. 2) There has been damage done and it needs to be repaired. 3)For renovations – things just look old and in need of renewal. 4) Enhancement – nothing is broken or damaged or old, they still look good, but just to make them look fancier.
Sometimes there is absolutely nothing wrong with something, but in order to make it bigger, better, faster, hold more, etc. it has to be taken apart, shut down, stripped down, sanded down, etc.
And sometimes while in the process of fixing something, we make the decision to have some enhancements done because, “Its in the shop anyway.”
I think GOD does the same with us. While He’s in there “fixing and repairing” our broken-hearts and spirits, He decides to add some fancy stuff while He’s at it. So if things seem to be taking longer than you expected to get “fixed”, it just may be the LORD adding a few bonus features to you. So, endure all the “sanding down”, “stripping sown”, “tearing sown”, “re-painting”, “re-tiling”, “re-surfacing”, etc. YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK SPECTACULAR, when He’s done!

DELIGHT vs FAVOR   Leave a comment

Numbers 14:8 ” If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey’.

Job 33:26 ” He shall pray to GOD, and He will delight in him, He shall see His face with joy, for He restores to man His righteousness. “

Psalm 1:2 ” But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. “

Psalm 5:12 ” For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. “

Psalm 30:5 ” For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. “

Psalm 37:4 ” Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. “

Proverbs 11:1 ” Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight.”

Proverbs 11:20 ” Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the LORD, but the blameless in their ways are His delight. “

Proverbs 11:27 ” He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, but trouble will come to him who seeks evil. “

Proverbs 12:22 ” Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal truthfully are His delight. “

In some personal study time I came across the word delight and decided to compare that with favor. Here are the dictionary definitions:

DELIGHT: to give great joy or high degree of pleasure, highly pleased

FAVOR: friendly or kind regard, unfair partiality, favoritism

My first conclusion is that delight is evident in an intimate relationship, favor doesn’t necessarily mean there’s intimacy. You can do ” a favor” for anyone. But, if you delight in someone, it means you know them and really like/love what they do, say, act, etc. and really want to do something for them or be with them. So, my second conclusion is that the LORD’s favor is good, but His delight in me is better. And in turn I want to delight in Him also – both actions being evidence of an intimate relationship.

TO FEAR OR NOT TO FEAR   3 comments

Psalm 25:14 “The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.”

Psalm 27:1 “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Psalm 34:4 “I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

Psalm 34:7 “The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.”

Psalm 34:9 “Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.”

Psalm 103:11 “For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;”

Psalm 103:17 & 18 “But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, “

Matthew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

II Timothy 1:7 “For GOD has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

I John 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

Revelation 2:10 “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

In studying this subject, one might want to exchange the word fear with reverence or respect when it is toward GOD, or even other authority figures. Reverence or respect denotes & exhibits the healthy type of fear, and is what is expected to be given to any authoritative figure. Also, there is the healthy fear of things for our protection, based on our maturity, experience & infirmities/abilities.
For example: A five year old should be afraid of going into a burning house to rescue his/her mother – lack of experience, training and physical strength would prove to be detrimental. But, on the other hand a 10 year veteran fire-fighter is expected to put aside the fear and enter into the house and get the job done, to the best of his/her physical and human abilities.
And that is exactly why God does step in sometimes and supernaturally does what our human’s bodies are not capable of. But, He also asks us not to fear what can happen to our earthly bodies at times, because He’s in control and works everything for His purpose and the protection of our souls, not always the protection of our mortal bodies. So, when fear comes upon us, we need to assess where it is coming from and what type of fear it is. Is it for our benefit and protection or is it potentially going to cause us harm? Is it inhibiting our lives/souls or is it preserving our lives/souls?
